Would it be possible for the modem to be designed so that the user could specify when and whether he/she wanted 8Mbps up or down? If so, since you don't upload and download at the same time, couldn't you end up with 8Mbps both ways all the time?

Maybe one of those 10 lurkers can help us both out, even though you're pretty eloquent in your own right.
