Biopure files to sell 2.5 million shares

WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Biopure Corp. BPUR , developer of oxygen treatments and drugs administered intravenously into the circulatory system to increase oxygen levels, filed on Monday to sell 2.5 million shares of Class A common stock.

The company said it would use the proceeds for marketing, clinical trials, expansion of facilities, capital spending and general corporate purposes according to the prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Based on today's share price, Biopure could gross $86.56 million from the stock sale.

After the offering there will be about 24.8 million shares of Class A common stock outstanding in the Cambridge, Mass.-based company.

The underwriters, led by J.P. Morgan & Co., have been granted the option to purchase an extra 375,000 shares in the event of heavy demand.
