A solid version of Solaris on IA/64 would have put Intel "over the top" in the high end server CPU business. SUN must have recognized this - and SUN wants ONLY SUN to be over the top - which I can't blame them for. SUN has been a Do-It-All (or BUY IT) company, and being just an OS supplier to Intel's CPU business must have really grated on them. Oh well - we'll have to see how the ITanium/IA64 market plays out in the near future. Maybe SUN will be forced into changing their strategy due to economic realites. But right now, SUN is on a roll.
