Chuckles - Re: 'Do you think Intel and Sun are parting ways on Merced? The anti-Sun rhetoric seems to be going up at Intel and Sun has been noticeably absent from Merced PR of late"

It sure sounds like it.

Sparks to fly between Intel and Sun over Sparc chips

Re: "Are you hearing anything about where Sun is going to get their next CPU from?"

SUN "goosed" the UltraSparc III speed in their ISSCC paper from 600 MHz to 800 MHz - so SUN thinks they are going to make their own - as usual.

Actually, I think AMD has lost a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY here.

SUN would like nothing better than to shoot acid up Intel's rear end - and what better way than to announce that new Sun Servers would be based on Intel's arch-RIVAL AMD's 64 bit CPU ???

It would be a CROWNING MOMENT for Scott McNealy and Jerry Sanders to stand at a Press Conference and announce such a strategic alliance where BOTH AMD and SUN gang up on their common enemy, Intel.

However, as you know, AMD's 64 bit SludgeHumper is only now being architected !!!

It won't see the light of day until the end of 2001 at best - about 18 months too late for BOTH SUN and AMD !!!

AMD, I'm afraid, has lost a golden, GOLDEN opportunity at this junction.

SUN may have no choice but to "buy" CPUs from Intel in a couple of years.

Or - SUN could buy the entire Alpha division from Compaq !
