Sparks to fly between Intel and Sun over Sparc chips>

Interesting article. For a while I thought Intel's biggest opportunity was break-in to Sun business while Sun was scrambling with UltraSparc III. Looks like Intel blew it. The only workstation/server vendor of any respect in this business is Sun.

<SUN "goosed" the UltraSparc III speed in their ISSCC paper from 600 MHz to 800 MHz - so SUN thinks they are going to make their own - as usual.>

Sun was probably underwhelmed with the Merced MHz. Jacking up the roadmap by 200MHz would make it look competitive and spread enough FUD to slowdown any Merced momentum before it starts.

<It won't see the light of day until the end of 2001 at best - about 18 months too late for BOTH SUN and AMD !!!>

AMD may be late but Sun may be not. Sun can FUD Merced for a year or two and try to clean house to get at least the next chip on time. Sun may not be behind unless you are certain their roadmap does not compete well with McKinley.

<AMD, I'm afraid, has lost a golden, GOLDEN opportunity at this junction.>

What? You think Intel has sole rights on screwups for last year or something? Nevertheless, very little may be lost for in real terms. With good execution x86-64 should do very well in the x86 space - encroachments on Sparc or Merced/McKinley may be pure gravy.

Merced without Sun seems more DOA than it ever was. The real battle may begin after McKinley comes on the scene.
