SANTA CLARA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Applied Materials, set to report earnings Tuesday, said Advanced Micro Devices had placed an order for the company's chip manufacturing equipment with plans to build copper-based microprocessors.

Applied Materials, the world's largest supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, said Monday that it has received an order for its Mirra chemical mechanical polishing, or CMP, systems.

Chipmaker AMD (AMD: news, chart) will use the CMP/cleaning systems to build an advanced copper-based microprocessor design for its well-known Athlon family. The Mirra systems are scheduled to be shipped this month to AMD's new fabrication facility in Dresden, Germany, according to a press release.

"We have used Applied Materials' Mirra CMP systems for our copper chip applications and expect its advanced process capabilities and high productivity to be a key part of our transition to smaller geometries and copper interconnect technology," said AMD in a statement.
