It looks like Macrovision capability is required in the encoders, although it may be only for the purpose of setting the "flag bit" that tells some of the analog circuitry in the D/A to insert the analog Macrovision anti-copying signal into the analog video signal output from the DVD. If the Macrovision system requires only a flag bit on the digital end, then it will not be difficult for any Macrovision licensee to incorporate it into its encoder.

I don't think the Macrovision PhaseKrypt encryption is used in DVDs . . . perhaps you mentioned it because it requires digital encoding while allowing for analog decoding. I guess its conceivable that Macrovision's DVD copy-protection scheme could require some digital encoding in conjunction with the flag bit, but I don't know. As you are aware, CSS encryption is used in DVDs to prevent digital to digital copying.
