There is a large banner in Intel's Chandler campus cafe proclaiming "Merced Tapes Out - July 4th". It's no surprise to anybody now but it was up there the day after tapeout, for any visitor to see. It gives the die size and the transistor count and other details of the project. I think it is a mistake for them to do this.
