According to Marketguide, GMST has a share float 4.5 times as big as CREE, and a market cap nearly 3 times as big. Thus CREE is easier to move. Short of news events there's no way to really know what moves stocks,but it seems to me that boards may play a part. I'm not sure that confusion matters, it may just be the total number of posts as long as they aren't completely negative. The boards feed off each other. Put together they may be a minor factor for companies the size of CREE but nevertheless worth watching as a surrogate for public tech investor opinion.
