Janice:
I don't wish to be mean, but your ignorance shows through in almost every paragraph you write. I suggest you go back and hit the books again. You missed a lot when you were in college. Perhaps it was your parroting professor's fault. . . ah, well, the results are still the same!
>>Really, you gotta stop relying on USA Today. Look for a source of info that'll get you a bit above the sixth-grade level.<<
I have never bought nor read an issue of USA Today, nor People magazine nor any of those other types of publications. I read a great deal, including Investor's Business Daily and other objective newspapers and periodicals.
>>And, um, we've never had a "mixed economy" in the States. Here, yes.<<
Only about 10,000 economists would disagree with you on this! BTW what do you call the redistribution of wealth programs, the IRS, Social Security, government regulation/or intrusion on almost every business enterprise, etc. It is certainly not pure capitalism. Were you aware that the IRS did not even exist until 1913? That no income was initially taxed above $5,000 starting in 1917 -- and the federalist promised the then sitting governors that if they ratified the income tax that it would NEVER go above $5,000? Another "soak-the-rich" scheme that backfired! It wasn't until WWII that the government withheld tax payments from payroll in "an emergency" measure. After WWII, when the supposed emergency was over, it was never repealed.
