lof...re: "40% drop in value of your account" if this is a "best rule of thumb", then your portfolio is highly speculative......if you are savvy with "advanced options strategies", your long portfolio should closely mimic the underlying index that you are weighted in.... comment on "higher percentage" if over weighted in options would equate to a portfolio that is being suspended by some very fragile threads...... great way to get wiped out in a rapid trend reversal
