Since my father personally knew Mr. Salk, I know that story is a lie. It was formulated back in the 1950's to discredit him because many were angered in the scientific profession that such a "maverick" could make the discovery while the "selfless" men of science were incompetent fools.

Thank god such "mavericks" exist.
