Chuck, did you see this:

With Senior Vice President Albert Yu, general manager of Intel's Microprocessor Products Group, Dr. Grove also demonstrated the first production-level PentiumÒ III processor-based systems that run at 1 GHz, to be introduced in limited quantities shortly.

I think I finally figured out Intel's strategy. They can't meet currrent demand because they are actually yielding untold cumines at 1G+. These chips are, in turn, being stockpiled in some secret location (Andy Grove's cubicle?). At some point....Intel will release thousands of chips at 1G+. The current cumines at < 800mhz will be relabeled the Celeron II. AMD will cease to exist.
