upside today - Dell resorts to lying

From upside today, Michael Dell's presentation at the MSFT win2K unveiling:

"The software executive also took a swipe at rival and Texas neighbor Compaq (CPQ), bragging about
how much Dell's share of the server market has grown while Compaq's remained flat.

At the end of a response to a customer who asked why he should buy from Dell rather than "the guy
135 miles down the road" -- Compaq is headquartered in Houston while Dell is in Austin -- he pointed
out that while Dell has seen steep growth in server sales in each of the last five years, Compaq's
server sales were flat. "

I see... enterprise sales went up 50% from 1998 to 1999. IDC reports that CPQ enterprise servers
revenues have increased 9% in the last quarter... and that CPQ is #2 in servers while DELL is, like
#5.... with a small fraction of the actual sales that CPQ has.

SO... does this mean that Mr. Dell is now out and out lying?... or is he just so out of touch with
reality that he doesn't care anymore what is real or not? Or did he mean that CPQ's sales are flat
compared to DELL in server sales for companies with 15-17 employees located in rural Alabama
servicing email only needs. ( I.E. partitioning the facts down to a point where he can state whatever
he wants to, even if it is barely meaningful? )

And why didn't Upside Today or the questioners call him on the discrepency between REALITY and
Mr. DELL's beliefs he states as 'facts'?

The Editors at Upside Today could have made a fun article by pointing out Mr. Dell's lack of stating
reality.
