Oh please. You and Jeff should read my pal David Horowitz's memoires (Radical Son, Destructive Generation) of growing up in a very active communist subculture in the '40s and 50s. He was part of a subculture whose goal was to subvert the American government, whose loyalty was to the Soviet Union. As David says, the right-wing crackpots were a lot more accurate in their suspicions than they are given credit for. McCarthy may have been an opportunist who made false accusations, but others were not. Most Boomers have never heard of Elizabeth Bentley, who in the late '40s testified against the Washington DC cell that she belonged to. And then there was the Hiss case. And the Rosenbergs, who were executed for giving atomic secrets to the Soviets. With the Soviet intelligence files now being made public it no longer works to claim that these people were falsely accused.
