interesting article. The Alpha comments seem off-base a little - IA-64 has a long way to go before it is ready to replace Alpha in CPQ's big machines - probably well after McKinley, maybe late 2002 at the earliest - and there is still a lot of uncertainty about what will happen with that line of technology. CPQ originally planned to transition Tandem Himalaya from MIPS to IA-64, but stopped that work and switched to Alpha - I don't think they would have done that if they planned to walk away from the chip any time soon.
