Paul, it appears SUN is straddling the fence with Itanium: publically supporting it yet devoting most of their resources and telling their customers Sparc is still the way to go. What strikes me is that Intel wouldn't make such a strong public statement unless they knew they had a strong hand. I wonder if SUN will change their tune soon and more activily support it (as you said they have a 1-2 year time frame even after Itanium is released before they will get hurt).

This reminds me a bit of HP's endorsement (or lack of) Itanium. Remember several months back, an HP manager basically said they will not support Itanium and would wait unitl McKinley since their PARC chips would be sufficient for the next couple of years. HP seems to have changed their tune since then...
