If it makes you feel any better, there are still a slew of schools named after McDonough in New Orleans. I attended one of the McDonoughs in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, 1957-1959. And of course I attended McDonough Day, wearing a white dress and carrying a bouquet of white flowers, to lay at the foot of McDonough's statue in front of City Hall, each year. My first introduction to the boredom that is political grandstanding. Interminable yada-yada. Yes, of course McDonough was well-intentioned. They were all honorable men, and all well-intentioned, by their own lights.
