I can't help but chuckle when I read an article that talks about MSFT in such negative light, and assumes that they are near-death. Statmements such as, "A browser in-a-box is the future of the desktop for most people." are truly ignorant. I would like to poll the thread to see who out there ONLY uses their PC for browsing the net. Most PC users use word processor and/or spread sheet at the minimum. Then there are the graphics apps, and media tools, not to mention Power Point. None of these apps will move to the net anytime soon. And the absurd hype that the desktop will just jump to Linux is equally silly.

NT2K represents MSFT's foray into the enterprise, and if it lives up to its performance and stability gains, will be a formidable adversary (due to Windows' overwhelming market presence). The market is missing some very important trends here. Numero Uno, MS Exchange is quickly moving to market dominance as the enterprise email server of choice. Platinum will only extend that market share, as MSFT is making major moves make Exchange the best and most scaleable platform. If they own the clients, and core pieces of the back end, they own the business. Linux and the others will continue to fight for the scraps of MSFT's table. THe other important pieces of this enterprise puzzle are SQL 7, Active Directory, and their leadership in the XML push.

Debates about whose solution is best are equally silly. MSFT provides "good enough" at an untouchable price.
