David,

I can't help but chuckle when I read an article that talks about MSFT in such negative light, and assumes that they are near-death.

It reminds me of the time in the early eighties when all the analysts and programmers like me declared that the mainframe was dead. I think each new generation of developers has a need to feel like they are overturning the status quo. We also embraced relational database technology over hierarchical, which happened. Linux on the server definitely has legs. The next machine I buy will be a server and I plan to install Linux for web development to check it out.

I thought the new paradigm was net centric, server based computing, so why merge with a company that betting on the fat client on linux? If the world is changing to a thin client browser-based computing what?s the big deal about a company that intends to offer a fat Linux client (locally installed apps like Corel). Why exchange one fat client for another?
