And the absurd hype that the desktop will just jump to Linux is equally silly.

David,

I think the Linux desktop may be closer than you think. Small software companies (like mine<g>) see Linux as an entirely new opportunity -- a place where you have an opportunity to develop a clientele without the immediate hard-hitting competition that you find in the Windows marketplace.

Take, for example, the case of Intuit with its Quicken & Quickbooks products. Intuit is currently pursuing a strategy of abusing its loyal customer base (some of you may have heard my rants & carrying on about this on other threads). Small developers with fine tools may well see Linux as an opportunity to compete against Intuit. One could develop "Quicken for Linux" and actually have a possibility of developing a following before Intuit ever decides to jump in. This same scenario exists with thousands of other desktop products in hundreds of other categories.

Our software companies have found that we can develop niche products that are, frankly, too specialized to attract a lot of competitive attention in the Windows market. I find I am not motivated at this point to move these products to Linux. But I am keenly interested in moving, for example, our medical office billing system to Linux. Why? The medical office billing business is awfully crowded. I think Linux gives me a product that has zero competition in my area (you'd be surprised how many physicians will hear the term "Linux" and suddenly think they have to have it).

Anyway, I expect to see a "piling on" effect. Hell, Linux is clearly a superior environment. I think there is reason for optimism.
