While Windows 2000 gestated for the past five years, the world of operating systems changed. One operating system that can fit all devices may well be as antiquated as the idea that mainframe computers can handle all computing tasks.

To NetLedger's Durkee, the demanding nature of the Windows 2000 upgrade will itself speed a change away from Microsoft dominance of the business infrastructure.
"The upheaval is causing people to re-evaluate what they're doing," he claimed. With his business based on hundreds of Linux servers linked together in a cluster, he believes businesses of all stripes will recognize the merit of the Apache Web server, Sendmail and other open source/free code on which much of the Internet runs.
In effect, Windows begets its own alternatives.
"Windows 2000 will generate a lot of excitement because of the huge Windows incumbancy. But as people look further down the road, they'll see how much it locks them in" to the Microsoft product line. One reason young Internet businesses don't go the Windows route, Durkee said, "is because they don't want to be locked in."
