While we can all spend our time debating what Intel really demonstrated in Palm Springs, I just saw a Gateway commercial for an AMD "blazing fast" 600 Mhz processor on TV for under $1,300. The amount of name recognition AMD is getting from these ads is incredible, and probably boosting sales of Athlon computers by all retailers. We now have 850 chips in volume, and six weeks from now AMD will give us a St. Patrick's Day present of 900 chips. I assume AMD will be selling 1Ghz chips in volume by June 1st, and then watch out as Dresden comes on line in the second half of 2000. Assuming Intel meets its production goals for the Willy, AMD should have millions of mid range ($2000-2500) home computer systems powered by >1 Ghz Athlons for sale at Christmas, while Willy will be for sale only in high end business systems. All in all, I'm quite pleased AMD's stock didn't take a hit from the IDC and am looking forward to a strong end to the month (absent further negative news on the inflation front).
