SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Compaq Computer Chief Executive
Officer Michael Capellas said during his keynote address at the Windows
200 Conference and Expo Tuesday that Compaq has been partners with
Microsoft for 2 decades.

Capellas said Compaq's deployment of Windows
2000 involves 18,000 desktops and more than 300
servers, with a staff of 3,200 certified NT
professionals and 1,000 Windows 2000 architects
helping to implement the product.

Capellas added insight into the company's ProLiant
e-generation strategy. As part of the agreement it
announced with Unisys Tuesday, the CEO said
Compaq will ship the product in 32-bit capability
by the middle of 2000, with 64-bit capability
scheduled for the end of the year. See related
story.

Additionally, Compaq showed off its sleek IPaq
Internet system, complete with Windows 2000,
and said the company has a $1 billion run rate
target on the product for the year.

Conference attendee Christopher York, a systems
analyst for Boeing (BA: news, msgs) in Seattle,
Wash., said he wants to be sure that his quarter of
a million users don't have down time running Windows 2000 and added
that his initial perception of the operating system has been very good.

"Can it provide us with what we want? Yes," York said. He added,
though, that Boeing will have to work out the speedbumps of the product
ramp along the way.

Shares of Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs) rose 2 5/16 to close at 27 on
Tuesday.

"Also at the keynote, Capellas said the company had high hopes for its
iPaq, a PC that discards older connection technology and is intended to
be easier for corporations to manage than today's comparatively complex
desktops. The company expects to sell $1 million worth of iPaqs by
year's end, a company representative said. "
