OT <<Uncle Sam's going to love me come the Ides of April!>>

There is a political commercial running down here that I love. The candidate says "Even a child knows that when you buy an $8 item with a $10 bill, you get $2 in change. Why can't the federal government understand this concept?"

Given the HUGE market gains last year, Uncle Sam is going to love a lot of folks. I just hope that some of the change from the $10 bill (not all - debt needs to be paid down too) trickles up to us folks who pay the highest rates already. As a practical matter where Uncle Same is concerned, I already feel like I am paying for that $8 item with a $20 bill and still getting no change.

Edit: CNBC just reported that the top 1% of taxpayers pay 33% of all taxes...maybe it is a $30 bill. :)

I generally like the flat tax idea (as I like almost anything that will save me money), but it would play havoc with the big tax incentive to hold gains for LTCG treatment.

I don't keep track of my turnover, but it was much smaller last year than in 98. I entered '99 with about 70% cash and what few sales I did have, were already in the LTCG category. But, I did not buy SILI until early August, so I have a while to go -- but the wait will be worth it, especially as it continues to appreciate! Take care.

PS - my wife is really starting to like SILI. I told her (almost jokingly) that if (when) SILI tripled ($600) and DIO quadrupled ($100), she could quit working. Needless to say, she is now watching them -- closely. <vbg>
