Are they now going to be in the thick of BillPayment/Rendering action?
Do they now own in partnership with one of the worlds largest banks a good piece of CheckFree?

Owning a piece of CheckFree isn't the same as having a controlling interest in a viable, if weak, competitor in the online bill payment industry, which is what they had before.

Yes MSFT (and FDC and Citi) got 1.1B in stock of yet another company, but CKFR got the industry. I think MSFT is right in sticking to writing software. They'll stay out of trouble that way and might actually put out more great products like Windows 2000.

If MSFT sold MSN to Yahoo for a 30% interest would you view that as MSFT getting "in the thick of" the portal business or ceding the territory to the leader?
