I worked in the chip side then and this info is 2nd hand from the GM as I was just a designer, but a friend. I remember the only clue was orders that were triple booked started to be canceled. You didn't really know if the orders were real to begin with or triple booked to guarantee supply of key components. When the stuff hit the fan, it unwound in a hurry. It makes me wonder if there are more controls in place today to make sure triple booking doesn't occur and thus mitigate the cycle effects somewhat? (perhaps grasping at straws?)
