Techie,

sorry for the delayed post. About your question:

According to what you say, then the new modems wouldn't work with any of the already released
Windows versions (3.1, 95 or NT). So, are you implying everyone will have to upgrade the OS to use
these modems? This somehow doesn't make much sense to me.

we're starting to get a better idea now, a few weeks later, about how this will all work out. First, I agree wholeheartedly that Microsoft will not go to market with just one modem supported. Amati, Motorola, PairGain, etc. -- all these guys undoubtedly will be supported when it comes time to launch. The configurations will work with the OS that makes sense, but likely, we're looking at Windows 95 and NT for integration. I doubt Windows 3.1 would be supported but who knows. They could wait until Windows 97, but I have not seen what they announced today yet. I am NOT implying anyone would have to upgrade their OS to use these modems. I do not believe that to be the case. Will someone possibly have to load some new drivers, etc., yes, probably. But this is all a very premature discussion. They are just figuring out what ADSL is, and there is a long way to go to make it work. My ONLY point was that you'd always rather be on the playing field than in the stands, and that's why I do not dismiss this as mere PR. They have a Supercom announcement coming up, I think, so we'll see what they add to this when that occurs. I still do not think there will be any impact from this alliance anytime soon.-db
