News Release
Mr Victor Jones reports
The company has begun production of its monoclonal antibody CTB-1 for the
next phase of in vivo studies with primates macaque mulata over the coming
months. Earlier tests revealed that CTB-1 injection increased virus-neutralizing
antibody levels in monkeys chronically infected with SHIV(IIIB). SHIV(IIIB) is a
recombinant retrovirus designed to allow study of anti-HIV immune responses in
macaque monkeys. The CTB-1 will be used to test whether monkeys that have
developed symptoms of retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency benefit from CTB-1
injection in terms of lower virus load, lymphocyte subset normalization or longer
disease free survival. The work will be carried out by Drs Sybille Muller and
Heinz Kohler in collaboration with scientists at the New England Regional Primate
Center and the US National Cancer Institute. If results from these next studies are
favourable, the company would proceed to seek approval for clinical trials to
determine if CTB-1 has beneficial effect on the immune system and on disease
progression in human HIV infection.
The company reported earlier that the US patent office has given notice of
allowance of certain patent claims on the monoclonal antibody CTB-1 and its use
in respect of HIV infection.
