NEMI Structure
NEMI is a partnership of the North American electronics manufacturing industry, including commercial and consumer electronics manufacturers, semiconductor manufacturers, substrate suppliers, materials suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and electronics service providers. Other NEMI affiliates include electronics industry associations, government agencies, and research universities. NEMI operates as a lean, virtual organization without "bricks and mortar" or an entrenched bureaucracy.
The NEMI organization is outlined below:

All organizations that are fully participating in NEMI will have a representative on the NEMI Council. The NEMI Council elects the NEMI Board of Directors, receives information on project and program proposals and status, and provides representatives to the various technology groups.

Members of the NEMI Board of Directors are elected by the NEMI Council. Voting Board members include representatives of four OEM electronic product manufacturers and three suppliers. Ex officio members include the NEMI Executive Director, and chairs of NEMI Standing Committees.

The NEMI Executive Secretariat consists of the NEMI Executive Director and a small support staff. The Secretariat provides administrative support to the Board of Directors and the NEMI committees and is the primary vehicle of communication within the initiative and to the public. Funding for the Secretariat, about one million dollars annually, comes from membership participation fees, which are prorated based on corporate sales levels.

Participating NEMI organizations include:

Original Equipment Manufacturers, or OEMs. These are producers of electronic products that connect to information networks, ranging from high-volume, low-cost home and business products to sophisticated computers and network electronics. Based on their product schedules, these companies prioritize the technical goals for suppliers. The benefit of this approach for the suppliers is that they will be developing technologies and capabilities that they know will be needed by their customers. This means they will have less market risk. For the high-volume, low-cost manufacturer, they will be ensuring that the technologies and capabilities that they need for future products will be available when they need them. No single manufacturer can do it all. But by collaborating, the OEMs can ask more of their suppliers, because technology and business risk is reduced for those suppliers.

Suppliers. NEMI emphasizes the role of vertical customer-supplier linkages within the entire electronics supply chain. NEMI strives for a robust world-class supply chain for the entire North American electronics industry. Suppliers include equipment, materials, and service providers.

Affiliated Organizations. These include agencies of the federal government, research universities, national laboratories, and industry associations. NEMI depends on these affiliated organizations for activities such as research, policy development and advocacy, and continued development of technologies within their purview.
