I think we all know the South lost. But civil wars are strange, aren't they? They are the most uncivil wars there are because they are brother against brother- figuratively and literally.

And to heal you let your defeated bretheren keep a little dignity.

And perhaps that is what the flag means to some people in the South.

It is the same reason we didn't kill the Emperor of Japan during WWII. We could have killed him, but I think it was MacArther who said he'd need tons more men to pacify the Japanese if their emperor was dead. he was a potent symbol, and even though we asked for unconditional surrender (which we did NOT do with the Germans) they still had that tiny shred of dignity left.

So maybe the flag is that tiny shred. I don't know. I really don't.
