And now, for the terrible, brief tale of my dealings with Sony:
I bought a rather expensive CD writer for the family at Christmas, but got a "corrupt file" message trying to setup the software on Christmas Day. I called the support number, and talked to three different people, none of whom, until the bitter end, would believe that there was anything wrong with the CD-ROM, and each of whom took up much time having me fiddle with this and that on my computer. Finally, I got instructions for obtaining a replacement CD, and the next day, while visiting my father, I used his fax to send my proof of purchase, and settled down to wait.....
Much time elapsed, and finally, I called Sony, and discovered that the CD-ROM had not been sent. I was promised that it would turn up in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, the Blizzard of the Millennium blew in, so I made allowances, and did not call again until into February. The person I spoke to did not know how to track a shipment, but promised to make sure to take the matter to his supervisor.....
Yesterday, I got the replacement, and it was to the wrong version of the Spressa, the X rather than X2, so I called, and an embarrassed fellow (in no way responsible) took care of me. And he did, too, sending the right thing by overnight delivery.....
Well, I put it all on, but was experiencing lock- up. I should say that my brother, knowing that they had taken their sweet time, had tried to give me a bootleg copy of the software in January, and it had caused lock- up then too, and preceded the total system crash that I sustained, so I was quite frightened that there was a fundamental incompatibility between my in- built DVD drive and the USB writer. I kept "troubleshooting", and tried to call Sony, but couldn't get a person. I finally decided to try the FAQ line, and got a hint that seems to have solved the problem. After hours of testing and fussing, I seem to have put it all together....
I will not say that Sony has been especially bad, in view of the season and its burdens. After all, it is a big time for expensive electronics, and the volume of calls must be huge. But I am a bit put off by the length of time I waited, only to be sent the wrong thing, and I think it was wise of whomever was responsible to send it overnight, and mollify me....... |
