Actually what it was is that the House of Ulster took turns at Kingship.

The U'Neill's took control of Ireland in a boat race.......the first clan to touch shore won the North. Seeing that he would lose, the head of the clan took a short axe, chopped off his hand, and threw it to shore ahead of the lead boat.

Hence, the Bloody Hand of Ulster.

The sons of U'Neill were to each take a turn at Rulership. Sle, youngest of the U'Neills, had many children and these offspring (Vin), were of course Slevin. The battle between the U'Neill Lords and the British came prior to the Sons of Sle coming into the Heirarchy.
