There's been a great deal of confusion lately regarding AMD's plans for the low-end of the market. As it stands, the K6-2 is the current low-end chip for AMD while it is to eventually replaced by Spitfire. Spitfire is an Athlon with on-die L2 cache in a Socket-A package (instead of the typical Slot package used by current Athlons). We will also see a K6-2+, however, which is essentially a K6-III with half the cache (128KB).
An AMD representative has posted on our General Message Board in a response to a reader seeking some clarification on Spitfire. I've quoted his comments below:

Spitfire is planned for the "performance" segment of the market, ie around the sub$1200 area where the K6-2/III have typically played. You'll have to wait for actual performance numbers till the part is launched, but it is planned to offer competitive performance at the price.

We have said Spitfire is targeted for a mid-year introduction. That time is fast approaching.

As Drew mentions here, Spitfire is scheduled for a mid-year introduction. We are currently estimating a May release.

I got this email I posted in January from AMD:
There is no AMD K6-III+.
Forthcoming AMD processors include:
AMD-K6-2+ = AMD-K6-2 on 0.18 micron, on-die cache, Super7
AMD Athlon K75 = AMD Athlon w/on-die cache, on 0.18 micron, Slot A
Spitfire = K75 w/on-die L2 cache, Socket A
Thunderbird = K75 w/on-die L2 cache, Slot A/Socket A (Performance workstation)
Mustang = Athlon mobile, 0.18 micron copper process, on-die cache up to 2MB enhanced core, Slot A/Socket A

Apparently the status of the K6-2+ is shall we say "dynamic"?
I'm still awaiting the "top secret" K6-3+ Copper <1 Watt mobile parts out of Dresden's back rooms.
