Sometimes I feel that people on this thread are like the monks in the monastery of Iona, isolated from the rest of Christianity by centuries of Viking and Anglo-Saxon invasions after the fall of the Roman Empire, keeping the faith alive among the barbarians until finally the country was re-Christianized.

I think we are approaching a decade or two of financial Dark Ages. The folly is so deeply ingrained that the ruination will be very hard to eradicate. It may be more like 1968 than 1929, but there's an awful lot of politico-economic garbage to be cleaned out and a generation of ignorant yuppies completely unequipped for the job.

Happily there are always opportunities. In the depth of the Depression my grandfather bought cheap land in central Florida and with his own hands on his vacations from his medical practice he planted orange trees. He learned all about growing oranges. In his retirement, those groves paid him a lot more than his medical practice ever had (medicine in a rural Tennessee county was no cornucopia in the 1930s and 1940s).
