Margin ... very specific rules for when and how
I use margin to sell stocks. How you say? I stay pretty much fully invested, so if I want to buy something I usually have to sell something else. So if I have a stock in my portfolio that is reaching the target I have set for it, I will keep a lookout for new opportunities. When I find the opportunity I buy on margin, then look for the opportunity to sell the former stock, sometimes quickly sometimes in a month or two (sometimes I sell calls on it and have to wait for it to be called away).

I also use margin when the market goes through a big correction, like the traditional Oct corrections. Then I buy on margin and figure out how to pay it off after the recovery.
TP

(I currently have margin debt of about 1% of my portfolio which I plan to pay off with TYC leaps, when TYC finally makes it's move)
