Microsoft's Ballmer says will "go after Sun" -FT

LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) Chief Executive Steve Ballmer has said his company's new Windows 2000 operating system would give it the ammunition to ``go after' competitor Sun Microsystems (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news), the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Sun leads the market for business and web server operating system software but Microsoft aims to change that.

The Financial Times quoted Ballmer as accusing Sun of ``stirring the pot' by raising anti-trust concerns in
Europe.

Last week, the European Union's Competition Commission said it had launched a probe of Windows 2000 to see if Microsoft was likely to extend its dominance in personal computers to business servers and electronic commerce.

Ballmer said Microsoft would reveal performance data on Thursday ``that may frighten the competition,'the Financial Times said.

Though Windows 2000's main competition is Sun's Solaris system, Microsoft was working on ways to compete more effectively with free operating system Linux, Ballmer said.

It looks as though Balmer is stirring the pot again. Is there some way SUNW could better incorporate LINUX OS into their full range of hardware applications. I know SUNW has announced some strategies to embrace LINUX but IMO it really is not enough.

Balmer was discussing that SUNW sells high priced "iron" and that using Windows 2000 and any Intel platform the end-user gets the equivalent machine for $300K LESS.

Does that mean that SUNW Services Group is worth $300K per machine as SUNW sell solutions rather than hardware & software.

As long as SUNW can sell the solution, implement it, make the customer money and satisfy their e-commerce internet needs; it really does not matter what the cost is as long as it is competitive. The Intel/Microsoft solution does not include all the special IT hand holding at $150/hr.
