LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft <MSFT.O> Chief
Executive Steve Ballmer has said his company's new Windows 2000
operating system would give it the ammunition to "go after"
competitor Sun Microsystems <SUNW.O>, the Financial Times
reported on Thursday.
Sun leads the market for business and web server operating
system software but Microsoft aims to change that.
The Financial Times quoted Ballmer as accusing Sun of
"stirring the pot" by raising anti-trust concerns in Europe.
Last week, the European Union's Competition Commission said
it had launched a probe of Windows 2000 to see if Microsoft was
likely to extend its dominance in personal computers to business
servers and electronic commerce.
Ballmer said Microsoft would reveal performance data on
Thursday "that may frighten the competition," the Financial
Times said.
Though Windows 2000's main competition is Sun's Solaris
system, Microsoft was working on ways to compete more
effectively with free operating system Linux, Ballmer said.
