Paul, <Does this imply that the 4-way Fosters will have their own 4-way SMP chip set (Colusa ?)and that the 870 is a "Chip set for Chip Sets" ?>

Not exactly, but close. Colusa will be a chipset of its own, and will share very little in common with 870. The components in the 870 chipset will be used as "scalable building blocks" and connected together in various configurations via the Scalability Port.

As usual, Intel will design lower-end 870 chipsets using the SP in simple configurations. Intel will also license SP technology to various OEM partners like IBM to build higher-end systems, such as 16-way distributed memory servers.

This is all part of Intel's strategy to PROLIFERATE the server platforms featuring Intel Architecture. As I said before, it's all about "scalable building blocks."

By the way, I've heard a coworker jokingly call the 870 the "ultimate Lego chipset" because of the various possible configurations.
