Microsoft releases Win2000 with massive rebates

Monopoly Microsoft uses its deep pockets to subsidize the introduction of its Windows 2000 Professional product. The upgrade version of the product is normally priced at $149.97 but today Microsoft released the product with a $70 rebate.

This is both a recognition that the product cannot sell to the retail public on its own and an attempt to grab market share with monopoly pricing.

The $70 rebate/subsidy is being offered through Staples. Other hardware rebates based upon a Win2000 purchases are also being offered as a purchase incentive.

The recognition by Microsoft that it is releasing a weak product with little prospect of retail sales is evident in the time frame for the rebate --- through 12/31/00.
