WellPoint Named FORTUNE Magazine's Most Admired Health-Care Company 2nd Year in a Row
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 2000--WellPoint Health Networks Inc. (NYSE:WLP - news), one of the nation's largest publicly traded health-care companies, was named FORTUNE magazine's most admired health-care company for the second consecutive year.

FORTUNE's most admired list is considered to be an annual ``report card' on corporate reputations. The magazine ranks the top 10 companies in 57 industries. Winners were chosen from the 1,000 largest U.S. companies. The rankings of companies are determined by votes cast by individuals in that industry, board members and securities analysts. The list appears in FORTUNE's Feb. 21 edition and is available through its Web site, www.pathfinder.com/fortune.

In addition to having the highest overall score in its industry, WellPoint was the highest-ranking health-care company in management quality, product quality, long-term investment value, financial soundness, use of corporate assets and social responsibility.

Said Leonard D. Schaeffer, chairman and chief executive officer of WellPoint Health Networks Inc.: ``We are honored to be recognized as FORTUNE's most admired health-care company for the second consecutive year. WellPoint has a long history of offering quality, network-based health plans that focus on choice and flexibility. Our unrelenting focus on customers has been vital to WellPoint's continued growth and profitability.'

The FORTUNE recognition follows the January 2000 announcement that, for the second year in a row, WellPoint was selected to FORBES magazine's Platinum List of America's best large companies.

WellPoint Health Networks Inc. serves the health-care needs of 7.3 million medical and nearly 32 million specialty members nationally through Blue Cross of California in California and UNICARE throughout other parts of the country.
