Mani and thread: Scumbria, when Athlon was first demoed it was only at 500 MHz. People like Elmer and Paul laughed at it and counted it out. Don't be as foolish and make the same mistake.

Good advice. I noticed that Intel put out a PR on the demo:

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000 - Intel Corporation Chairman Andrew S. Grove today kicked off the semi-annual Intel Developer Forum by demonstrating the company's fastest microprocessor: a chip running at 1.5 gigahertz (GHz), or 1.5 billion clock cycles per second, at room temperature. Based on a new microarchitecture from Intel, the chip is code-named "Willamette."

I don't think Intel would jeopardize its reputation, and open itself up to legal liability by misrepresenting the facts as stated above.

I agree there is room for discussion on everything else.....e.g., transmeta has a chip that runs at 700+ mhz...right? But we know the benchmarks are not equivalent to a PIII 700 or Athlon 700. In other words, there is plenty to argue about without appearing foolish.

Just my opinion.
