Document management software growth continues to be strong, as organizations move more business processes from paper to electronic format documents and recognize the need to manage and control those documents. Intelligent organizations are viewing the document management implementation as far more than a simple replacement of the filing cabinet. Online availability of critical corporate information is the first step in building new knowledge management applications which will support and guide business teams in the near future. The penetration of document management across industries and applications is just beginning. This will be a strong growth area for several years to come.
In the workflow area, business process automation continues to be a goal in many organizations, and many high value, easy to automate processes are now implemented in workflow software. But workflow software revenue growth has slowed significantly from the rapid pace of the early 1990's, which was fed by early adopters piloting and completing large application systems.

The 21% growth in overall market revenue represents an increase in the rate of growth relative to 1995, with the increase entirely attributable to Internet and Intranet search implementations.
As widespread use of Internet engines and OS-integrated functionality forces the price of basic search rapidly to zero, the only growth in this market will come from advanced applications which extend the range and the intelligence of the search process.
