Sony, Intel in talks on e-home appliances

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Sony Corp.?s U.S.-listed shares climbed 5.4 percent Thursday on news that the company is negotiating a tie-up with Intel Corp. on next-generation home appliance and personal computer networks.

"We are in talks with Intel to see how we can support their ?Electric-home (E-home)? next-generation home appliance network business," said a spokesman for Sony . "But we haven?t reached any agreement yet on the matter," he added.

Sony shares (SNE: news, msgs) jumped 13 5/8 to 264 1/8 in recent trading.

Intel?s (INTC: news, msgs) "E-home" is a next-generation network technology which makes home electronics devices like cookers and microwave ovens easier to use by hooking them up to the Internet.

The two companies will announce details of the plan as soon as they reached the basic agreement, the Japanese electronics giant said.

Shares of Intel (INTC: news, msgs) advanced 2 9/16 to 109 3/4>>
