NR: I would have thought a nouveau riche would be happy at the thought of COMPAQ being sold to CMGI. Or are you in love with the company, too?

Merger and acquisition deals are rarely obvious. Did you predict or expect that CMGI would buy Alta Vista? Did you expect CPQ to buy Digital? COMPAQ has massive, valuable assets including an international franchise, intellectual properties in the form of hundreds of patents, billions in cash and securities and market leadership in several segments. Yet it's stock price is cheap and has been for some time. It's not a question of whether Rosen or Capellas are nice guys, its a question of how much it would cost to buy COMPAQ and get a better return than Rosen has managed. I would think there are half a dozen companies who could do it.

CMGI would be an unusual acquirer, because it would not be acquiring to merge with its own similar operations, it would allow the COMPAQ brand to flourish and would support it from its stable of other companies.

A little lateral thought - I concede it is not as intellectualling stimulating as guessing the share price on some arbitrary day in April.
