WSJ had an article on 2/15/00 on margin debt. Here's a paragraph from that article - " Margin debt now equals 1.57% of market value, equal to its peak in the fall of 1987 ahead of the October 1987 stock-market crash, according to Bianco Research, although different market value measures suggest the ratio was somewhat higher in the early 1980s. By comparison, that ratio approached 30% in 1929."
