I agree with both of your suggestions. (below) On my screen, 1024 x 768, Pseudo classic & IE5, the date takes up 4 lines and looks really stupid.

Could you possibly consider removing the year? On the subjects I monitor, I KNOW the last post was in Feb of 2000 and not Feb of 1999. You could also reduce the length of the date/time by using military time and skipping the AM/PM.
