Dear James,
I have never seen Paul back off because of pressure from Peter or others. The bottom line is that obeying the law is not in opposition to grace (thou shall not kill, etc...). Putting yourself under its yoke and not following the Lord is wrong.
People being saved is more important than the law and our opinions of it. Paul had a problem with forcing the law on Gentiles that already had a relationship with God.
The Church has many rules that prevent the love of God from reaching people and this will be judged in His time.
