Interesting CC discussion on competition!
I heard Nettles say that LU, Nortel and others are competion mainly in the legacy areas(meaning old technology optics) and that only CIEN and Nortel is really competing in the new technology areas. Interesting, he said that Nortel only competes in the new areas with technology that they recently purchased, and it does not seem to be nearly as good and Ciena's offerings and certainly not as broad and comprehensive. It his understated way, Nettles basically said that CIENA is the world leader in the new fiber optic bandwidth technology. To me, this was very interesting and important.

I just saw a report on CNN or CNBC about Sycamore. My goodness, their sales and profits grew at the same percentage as Ciena's did, but their revenues are only 10% of Ciena's. I think that we have a serious valuation issue here. Either Sycamore is way too high or CIEN is too low. But the report says that by 2003, that the worldwide market for their equipment (and Ciena's) will be $40BB. I believe that this bodes positive for Ciena's business and their stock price. I concluded that their business prospects are looking incredibly strong with improved profits. JMHO
