Compaq and Microsoft Shatter
Previous World Record Benchmarks; Record-setting
Benchmarks Prove Power of Compaq ProLiant Server
Running Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000

HOUSTON, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Delivering everything customers need to build a
Windows 2000 infrastructure optimized for e-business, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:
CPQ - news) today released record-breaking benchmarks that show the unbeatable power of
Compaq ProLiant servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000.
Industry-leading benchmarks for Windows 2000 were recorded on Compaq's ProLiant Server
line running a broad range of applications. These benchmarks prove that customers can deploy
their most demanding e-business applications running Windows 2000 on Compaq ProLiant
Servers.

One of the benchmarks, achieved on a ''shared-nothing'' cluster of 12 ProLiant 8500 servers
running Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, sets a new TPC-C record -- for any hardware,
operating system or database -- of 227,079.15 transactions per minute at $19.12 per tpmC. This
represents the first time an industry-standard system has out-performed all other TPC-C
benchmarks. In fact, the Compaq ProLiant 8500 cluster demonstrated nearly twice the
performance of the top competitors including SUN Enterprise 6500 and IBM RS6000.

''The extraordinary performance benchmarks achieved today are a direct result of the
Compaq/Microsoft Frontline Partnership, which is focused on the goal of providing customers
with the most stable and reliable computing platforms available in the market today,'' said Bill
Gates, Microsoft's chief software architect. ''These results represent the first in a series of
significant innovations on the part of Microsoft and Compaq, and even the largest-commerce
customers should feel confident that no matter how quickly they grow, they will always be able to
benefit from the time-to-market and cost of ownership advantages of our platform.''

''Compaq is committed to delivering the ultimate in scalability and reliability. Today's Windows
2000 benchmarks prove that Compaq ProLiant Servers delivered as part of Compaq's ProLiant
eGeneration strategy meet the needs of our largest e-business customers,'' said Michael Capellas,
President and Chief Executive Officer, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''Compaq and
Microsoft envisioned this proof -- to show customers how they can build a scalable, Internet
enabled environment from industry-standard building blocks -- and Compaq got it done. Now we
will deliver this capability to our customers.''

The benchmarks used are industry-standard tests performed on Compaq ProLiant Servers
running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, as well as Compaq/Windows 2000 server platforms
running Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, messaging
software, e-commerce software and Terminal Server from multiple Independent Software
Vendors (ISVs). Some of the applications tested include: Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SAP ERP
software, PeopleSoft ERP software, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft e-commerce software, and
Microsoft Terminal Server.

World Record Benchmarks

Ushering in this new era of scalability, Compaq announced a series of benchmarks highlighting
their leadership today with enterprise applications.

-- World record on all platforms for TPC-C benchmark - A Compaq ProLiant
environment running Windows 2000 Advanced Server and SQL Server 2000
Enterprise Edition set a new world record for the Transaction
Processing Performance Council's TPC-C benchmark. The new result,
227,079.15 order transactions per minute (tpmC), was achieved on twelve
Compaq ProLiant 8500 servers, each with eight Intel Pentium III Xeon
550 MHz processors, federated together into a single database system,
and is greater than any other result achieved on any other database,
hardware or operating system. This result eclipses the previous record
of 135,815 tpmC(2) by 67 percent. Additional TPC-C benchmark results
released using 6, 8, and 10 nodes show the scalability of this
architecture(3).

-- SAP R/3 Standard Application Sales and Distribution (SD) modules
standard benchmark
- Compaq and Microsoft today announced a record-breaking SAP SD
Benchmark. The companies jointly produced a benchmark number of 6,700
SD Benchmark Users, the best result ever published for this benchmark
on the Intel platform (details regarding this benchmark are available
under sap.com This
benchmark achieved with SAP R/3 Release 4.0b, a component of the
mySAP.com Internet Business Strategy, exceeds the previous record of
4,900 SD Benchmark Users. This benchmark achieved by using the
ProLiant 8000 with eight Intel Pentium III Xeon 550MHz processors,
ServernetII and SQL Server 2000 Advanced Server is driving NT to the
highest levels of the enterprise. For the full hardware configuration

-- World record on all platforms for PeopleSoft benchmark - Compaq
products, using SQL Server 7.0 Enterprise Edition and Windows 2000
Advanced Server, set a new world-record for the PeopleSoft Human
Resources Management System (HRMS). The benchmark result, 21,000
concurrent HRMS users, was achieved on a Compaq ProLiant 8000 database
server with eight Intel Pentium III Xeon 550 MHz processors. This
result is the highest ever achieved on any platform and is 20 percent
better than the best result achieved on a competing platform.

Numerous Windows 2000 performance tests were conducted, staged against identical Compaq
platforms running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 as well as against competitors' Windows 2000
platforms. The ServerBench test for scalability from one to eight processors generated such
impressive figures as 15 percent increases on 8 processors in a ProLiant 8500 server. SAP Retail
running on Windows 2000 and a ProLiant 8500 reported 151 thousand additional sales data lines
per hour on Windows 2000 than when running on Windows NT 4.0. A Microsoft Exchange 5.5
email server running on Windows 2000/ProLiant 8500 server platform reported the best
performance available at 33,400 MAPI Messaging Benchmark (MMB). This gives Compaq the
#1 position for performance on 2P, 4P, and 8P servers. Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce
Edition produced 280 Active Server Pages per second for a typical load on an eCommerce site
running Windows 2000 on ProLiant 8-way. The result was a 175 percent increase from a 2P
server.

Please see attached fact sheet for a full listing of Industry Standard tests and of resulting
performance numbers by ISV.

Compaq ProLiant Benchmarks for Windows 2000

The Industry Standard Tests
Compaq laboratories performed a broad range of industry standard benchmark
tests pertaining to the specific hardware and application.
Hardware Performance Tests
-- The TPC-C benchmark is an industry-standard test measuring transaction
processing system throughput in terms of orders processed per minute.
-- ServerBench measures the performance of application servers in a
client/server environment by running tests that produce different types
of load on the server.

ERP Application Performance Tests
-- The SAP R/3 SD benchmark measures the maximum number of concurrent
users supported by a system while guaranteeing user response times of
less than two seconds.
-- SAP Retail was tested for maximum amount of sales data lines processed
per hour.
-- The PeopleSoft HRMS benchmark measures the maximum number of concurrent
users supported by a system while guaranteeing a user response time of
less than three seconds.
-- The PeopleSoft Online Benchmark measures client response times for an
individual client and for a single user with multiples of 1,000
concurrent users in a controlled environment with no other applications
running.

Messaging Application Performance Tests
-- MAPI Messaging Benchmark (MMB) for Exchange 5.5 is a workload benchmark
based on the LoadSim canonical workload profile for what Microsoft has
deemed a "typical corporate E-mail user."

E-Commerce Application Performance Tests
-- Compaq and Microsoft designed a test for Windows 2000 and Microsoft
Site Sever, E-commerce Edition that measures the relative performance
gain from going from one processor through eight processors by
measuring the ASPs/sec throughput for each processor configuration
running the same stress program with the same hardware/software
configuration.
